BRAAI Inspired Dinner x Urban Grape: The Future of South African Wine 3.19.21

FRIDAY, MARCH 19 6-7:30 PM

Join UG's very own TJ Douglas, in conversation with several of the South Africa's new and exciting generation of winemakers: Tinashe Nyamudoka of Kumusha, Berene Sauls of Tesselaarsdal, and Rudger Van Wykg of Kara-Tara.

South Africa is a wine growing region rich with unique soils, stunning topography and wide-array of microclimates perfect for creating some truly magical juice, however, it is also a country whose history is marred by its history of apartheid. One of the questions we most often receive from our customers is: how can I be a conscious consumer of South African wine, and support equal economic opportunity in the wine industry with my buying power?

To answer this complicated question, we’ve assembled a panel of three of the most exciting up-and-coming Black winemakers in South Africa. On the wine front, their products exemplify that certain something special about South African wine: the uniqueness of the terroir, the laser-like restraint, the perfect balance. On the cultural side, they’re here to help us unravel the past, present, and future of winemaking in the country.

In celebration of their accomplishments - and while experiencing the immense quality of their work - we will hear about the challenges and opportunities that helped to shape them, their winemaking decisions, and what they see for the future of South Africa.

We are thrilled to offer a menu selection from Comfort Kitchen, especially curated for the evening, in a nod to the beloved Braai tradition of South Africa! Each meal listed below serves one, and you are welcome to order as many meals as you’d like for pick up on the 19th in time for the event.
